The activity within the NCAA Transfer Portal will be chaotic, the question is how active will Pitt be?

It would not shock me if we see a ton of activity — both incoming and outgoing — with this Pitt roster. When you’re 2-8 and have been as disappointing as Pitt has been, it’s only natural and change is expected.

Although official activity can’t begin until December, Pitt might have already started the process of showing interest in a talented player currently in the portal.

But as the third-year sophomore made his second career start Saturday, he continued to show encouraging signs in his development. It certainly wasn’t perfect, and there’s a lot of work to be done, but Veilleux continues to show that he has a future as the Pitt starting quarterback.

It will get tough — very tough — on the road against Notre Dame this weekend, but for now, let’s look more in-depth at Veilleux’s day.

The Panthers are coming off a big win against the No. 14 Louisville Cardinals last Saturday, which saw them hold their opponents to zero points in the second half en route to a 38-21 victory. The win features as the highest ranked victory for the Panthers since they defeated the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes in November 2017, and with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on the road this Saturday, there are opportunities for the Panthers to have more great performances the rest of 2023.

Hopefully the rain that is coming down all Saturday, will pass through by the evening because Pitt will be hosting a number of talented recruits on unofficial visits.

The Panthers coaching staff has attracted a wide-ranging group of players from different recruiting classes, featuring a number of exciting players that will bolster the program if they choose to commit.

Here are names that Pittsburgh Sports Now has confirmed, and there are more recruits that will announce on Saturday that will join the list.

Pitt’s class of 2024 currently has 21 commitments and is ranked No. 32 in the country by Rivals.

As we know, Pitt — along with nearly every other program in the country — will also attempt to add players via the transfer portal. Pat Narduzzi and his program were very active last offseason bringing in players to fill holes.

Due to the decommitment of Eric Ingerwerson, Pitt doesn’t have a 2024 commitment from a tight end. But the coaching staff could look to fill that need with a player that’s currently in the transfer portal.

It’s been a disaster, to put it lightly, and a lot of that falls on the coaching staff and the offensive game plan. I mean, the lone win at this point came against a currently winless Wofford. Pitt has been a bad football team.

Narduzzi has promised change.

“We gotta bye week to figure out what we do well, what we don’t do well, stop doing what we don’t do well and do something better,” Narduzzi said after the loss to Virginia Tech. “And we gotta obviously change some things up. And that’s what we’ll do in the open week, is try to figure out what we gotta do to get first downs and touchdowns.”

But in the meantime,… let’s do some grading.

Pittsburgh Sports Now can confirm that the coaching staff will be checking in on a fast-rising recruit from the WPIAL at his high school this afternoon.

Pitt is visiting Matt Sieg at Fort Cherry High School in McDonald, Pa. later this hour. It remains to be seen which coach will be making the trip out, but it’s likely WPIAL recruiter Cory Sanders.

Sieg — a 6-foot, 170-pound quarterback/defensive back in the class of 2026 — hasn’t received an offer from Pitt yet, but as he’s putting together an electric sophomore season and making it out to Acrisure Stadium on Oct. 14 for the Louisville game, it’s likely on a matter of time.

Penn State and Nebraska have offered the sophomore signal caller, and as he continues to impress at Fort Cherry and make visits, his list of offers should explode.

He’s been immensely impressive this season, completing 31-of-48 pass attempts (64.6%) for 552 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception, and he’s added 25 carries for 474 yards (19.4 yards per carry) and 14 touchdowns on the ground.

And he’s coming off a statement win over Bishop Canevin, throwing for 160 yards and three touchdowns and running for 277 yards and four touchdowns in a 48-41 win.

Pitt currently does not have a commitment in the class of 2025 or 2026, with both classes still a ways off, but the recruiting efforts this week will certainly revolve around the sophomores and juniors in the key recruiting areas. And Sieg will certainly be a recruit to watch as he builds a relationship with the Pitt coaching staff.

Pitt currently holds a verbal commitment from 2024 three-star quarterback Julian Dugger and landed three-star quarterback Ty Dieffenbach in the class of 2023.

Instead of entering this week of recruiting on a positive, Pat Narduzzi’s program sits at 1-4 with serious question marks as to how many wins they’ll be able the rest of the way.

The bottom line is that Pitt’s struggles in 2023 come down to two factors: poor play at quarterback and as equally as bad job being done by offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, Jr.

We know that Phil Jurkovec won’t be returning in 2024 and with the job poor job he’s done since being hired last year, it’s becoming impossible to imagine a scenario in which Cignetti returns.

Cory Sanders, Pat Narduzzi and the other Pitt coaches have done a good job of getting in with these players early and have worked hard to create a bond between the two sides.

One of those players that will eventually sign with a Power 5 school and that holds a Pitt offer, will be at Acrisure Stadium on Saturday for the Panthers matchup against Cincinnati.

This particular player is one my favorites in the Class of 2025 and would be a huge addition for Pitt.
